April 19th 2021, as reported by Bloomberg, Amazon Game Studios have announced that they are cancelling their new Lord of the Rings MMO.
Amazon first announced working with Athlon Games to create the MMO in 2019, Athlon Games was at that time was owned by Leyou Technologies. However, in December Leyou was purchased by Tencent Holdings. Leyou had apparently been looking for a buyer since 2019.
The reason for the cancellation of the Lord of the Rings MMO was stated as being “unable to secure terms to proceed with this title at this time”
No idea what that is supposed to be mean but for Amazon it means yet another game cancelled (Breakaway and Crucible being the studio’s other attempts). With the studio’s other MMO, New World, suffering delays and other problems Amazon are having a rough time of it.
For the long suffering, but ever hopefully, MMO community it is just another sign that the MMO genre hates its fans.
There is still hope for the future though with MMOs such as Ashes of Creation, Pantheon and Mortal Online 2 being actively worked on and getting close to Alpha/Beta stages. Keep checking back with us for updates on those games and their development progress.
